Drivers
Privacy statements are often complicated documents. But the bottom line is that we collect information about the truck you drive. We do this because we want to make our products even better and because it's important for planners and fleet owners, for example, to have insight into the deployment and allocation of DAF trucks for their business.
To improve amongst others current and future generation DAF trucks, your safety and comfort, CO2-reduction and to inform the fleet owner about the use, condition and other statuses of the truck, the vehicle you are driving may be equipped with various internet connected technologies. By means of this technology, information on the use of the truck is transferred to DAF Trucks N.V.
This data may include vehicle speed, selected gear, engine speed, fuel consumption, diagnostic fault codes, speed- and odometer reading, software versions and also the location of this vehicle, as further set out in this privacy statement. Such data may be considered privacy sensitive, even though when we do not process such data at a personal (your) level but only at a truck level.
About the DAF Connect services – how this service worksBased on this information, we have built a data service that we offer to fleet owners - DAF Connect Services - who get access to the truck data generated by you as a truck driver. We obtain this data from a specific piece of hardware in the truck - the Truck Control Unit (or "TCU"). This TCU transmits the data to a digital, non-public DAF platform via the wireless 3G/4G Internet network (just like smartphones). This platform is not a public platform. Only your fleet owner that has an active subscription to DAF’s Connect Services has access to merely that part of the platform that contains his truck’s data. We have agreed with the fleet owner(s) that we may also use the truck data to pursue our own (business) purposes, such as improving our products and services and further maximizing the durability of our trucks. |
Below we explain what data we process in relation to your use of the vehicle, for what purposes we process such data, and what our roles are in this processing.
A. Data we process on behalf of the fleet owner
The fleet owner may have entered into an agreement with DAF Trucks N.V. or any of our affiliates – for example to be able to provide roadside assistance or monitor the performance of a vehicle. The fleet owner is considered the data controller and is responsible for handling your personal data. DAF Trucks N.V. is considered the data processor here for this activity. Meaning that we perform data processing operations under the responsibility of the fleet owner.
As a data processor, DAF Trucks N.V. only acts on instructions of the fleet owner, for example where the fleet owner has requested specific services from DAF Trucks N.V. If you are not the fleet owner of this vehicle yourself, you can contact the fleet owner who will provide you with further information, for example on the purposes of this data processing. You can also contact the fleet owner to exercise your privacy- and data protection rights, such as the right to get an overview of the personal data the fleet owner processes on you, to correct this personal data or request deletion thereof. The fleet owner may share your personal data with third parties. DAF Trucks N.V. does not carry responsibility for these data sharing practices by the fleet owner. Only upon instruction of the fleet owner, DAF will assist in handling your request to exercise your privacy- and data protection rights.
DAF Trucks N.V. may process data on behalf of the fleet owner of your vehicle for the following purposes. Please be aware that this information is provided for ease of reference and convenience only, and may not reflect the actual use of the data by your fleet owner as a data controller. We recommend to contact the fleet owner should you have any questions about these processing activities.

The fleet owner is your first point of contact for more information about these activities and how your personal data is involved. DAF Trucks N.V. has no factual influence on this part as we conduct these data processing operations on behalf of the fleet owner under their instructions. The rest of the operations, on behalf of DAF Trucks N.V. itself rather than the fleet owner, are explained in part B of this web page.
B. Data DAF Trucks processes for our own purposes
We may also process data originating from or generated by the vehicle for our own purposes. Even though DAF Trucks N.V. cannot and certainly does not intend to trace this data back to you individually, certain data has to be treated as personal data under relevant laws and regulations, such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation, or “GDPR”. This is because with the help of the fleet owner – in the form of supplementary information – DAF Trucks N.V. could in theory trace this data back to you individually.
Below follows an overview of the data processing activities in relation to truck data. We have also included the purposes we use this personal data for, the lawful basis for the processing of your personal data and retention periods. Please be informed that if your complaint, remark or question is about how your personal data is being processed for the purposes described in this section B, the responsible party and your first point of contact for those data processing activities is DAF Trucks N.V. and not the fleet owner.
If we process your personal data in a very different way than mentioned below, we will inform you about this separately by means of a separate (privacy) notification.

Data is gathered from the truck hardware equipment, such as the Truck Control Unit (TCU) to make analyses on how the vehicle is performing, how the features of the vehicle are used by the driver and how we can improve our product and our services. This is the diagnostic tool to service DAF vehicles. The TCU is a box within the DAF vehicles containing several chips and measurement instruments, collecting (primarily technical) data. We may also collect data through the DAVIE device. TCU and DAVIE data is transferred into our data lake. Here we cleanse the data and prepare it after which the data analytics can be performed. These analyses result in data-driven insights into where the areas for improvement lie (especially on a technical level) regarding our trucks, products and services and to test potential vehicle solutions. For example, to estimate in due time when a certain truck part requires replacement and investigate the causes in order to improve the production process of that specific part. Besides this, fleet owners also expect DAF Trucks N.V. nowadays to constantly improve the performance and safety aspects of our products and services, especially if it concerns your safety. DAF Trucks N.V. is performing analytics on the Connect Services data because we are interested in the data of the truck, for which we require for example VIN number. The impact on your privacy as a truck drivers is very limited as it will not be our goal to tell something about your driving behavior and to monitor your whereabouts as a driver. |

United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and related legal requirements obliges DAF amongst others to collect technical data - to know which software is running on the truck and to have the latest version on the truck. It concerns for example "UN Regulation on uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regards to cyber security and cyber security management system". CO2 legislation; EURO 5 and EURO 6, other UNECE legislation, legislation on safety and security legislation also require DAF Trucks N.V. to perform such OTA software updates. Furthermore, OTA software updates will introduce new data of truck features in the future. |
